Phil & Jewel

On July 23rd, 2010, our son Phil married his sweetheart, Jewel.

Congratulations, guys!  We love you…

May you have a long and happy marriage, and may your quarrels end before the sun goes down.

Phil has always been an easy guy to be around.  He’s gregarious, funny, and makes friends easily.  Everyone knows Phil –  he’s animated and makes an impression wherever he goes.

Jewel is energetic, sweet, and has a good head on her shoulders.  She’s hard-working, has a happy disposition, and is kind to others.

They met through a set of mutual friends, and started dating about 18 months ago.  By the end of the first year, they were already talking marriage, so we weren’t surprised when they made a decision and talked with both sets of parents about it.

Phil, like his older brother before him, has joined the Army National Guard, and will be leaving for basic training in a couple of weeks.  He and Jewel decided to have their wedding before he left, so they could take advantage of the financial benefits that are given to married personnel.  So he’ll be gone for the first six months of their marriage, which is going to be tough on both of them.

They had considered waiting until he got back to have the wedding, but it would be tough whether they had married or not; they are in love and would still be away from one another.  The first 9 weeks will be the hardest, because they will have very limited phone conversations once a week.  But when Phil is at his AIT training, where he will be receiving instruction in computer maintenance and repair, he will be able to use Skype to have video conferences through his computer.   That will make things easier in some ways, and harder in others.

Jewel supports his decision to serve his country in this way, and while she’s not looking forward to spending half of her newlywed year separate, she believes the choice they made is right, and she’s proud of him.

A week before their wedding, the three of us went out to a local park and took some photos.  Below is a slideshow with a small selection of pictures.  And after that is a short video, with their wedding kiss.
